At Doulas of Utah, we support a wide range of families with a wide range of parenting styles. In our prenatal visits with birth doula clients and during postpartum planning sessions with postpartum doula clients, one question comes up again and again: What routines should we start with our newborn?
We always approach this with care. Our role isn’t to push a specific philosophy or impose personal preferences, but rather it’s to help parents discover what feels right for their family. Still, after supporting hundreds of babies and parents, we’ve seen firsthand that one thing makes a meaningful difference across the board: consistency.
Babies and children thrive with predictable rhythms. Establishing simple routines early on helps babies feel secure, helps parents feel more confident, and often makes the adjustment into newborn life just a little smoother. Here are a few gentle, adaptable ways to begin building routines with your baby:
1. Create a Predictable Flow
Instead of a strict schedule, start with a flow, something like wake, feed, play, sleep. Repeating this pattern throughout the day helps your baby begin to understand what comes next without the pressure of watching the clock.
2. Use Sleep Cues, not Sleep Rules
Newborns are still learning how to exist in the world, so keeping sleep rituals simple is key. Dim the lights, turn on white noise, sing the same short lullaby, or swaddle, whatever feels comforting to your baby. These repeated cues help them connect the routine with rest.
3. Anchor Your Day With One or Two Consistent Moments
Maybe it’s a morning “good morning” song, a daily walk, or a quiet snuggle before bedtime. These rituals can help regulate both baby and parent, giving you something grounding to return to each day.
4. Build Flexibility Into Every Routine
Consistency doesn’t mean rigidity. Some days your baby will nap longer, feed more often, or be extra alert. That’s normal. The goal is to follow your baby’s cues while keeping the general patterns the same.
5. Start Small
A routine doesn’t need to be elaborate to be effective. Even tiny repeated habits, such as wiping hands before feeding, stepping outside for two minutes of fresh air, or reading a page of a book, build familiarity and comfort.
Establishing routines with your newborn that build consistency isn’t about perfection, it’s about creating a rhythm that supports your baby and gives you more confidence as a parent.
