How to Emotionally Prepare for Postpartum: Mental Health Tips for New Moms

This blog post was written for Doulas of Utah by our friends at Yarrow Therapy and Counseling Services.

Pregnancy often comes with planning, baby registries, feedings, sleep, and nursery décor. But one of the most important parts of postpartum is often overlooked: preparing emotionally.

Postpartum isn’t just about caring for a new baby; it’s about adjusting to a new identity. This season is full of love and strength, but also vulnerability. Preparing emotionally can help you feel more grounded, confident, and connected during this transition.

Know What’s Normal And What’s Not

Up to 80% of new moms experience “baby blues”, mood swings, tears, irritability, that usually go away within two weeks. If symptoms worsen or linger, it may be postpartum depression or anxiety. These are medical conditions, not personal failures, and they are treatable. Awareness helps you know when to reach out.

Build Your Support System Now

Social support is one of the strongest predictors of a positive postpartum experience. Support isn’t just family, it’s people who help you feel safe, understood, and cared for. This might include friends, a therapist, a postpartum doula, a lactation consultant, or a local support group. Establishing these contacts before birth makes it easier to ask for help later.

Talk Honestly About Expectations

Postpartum rarely goes exactly as imagined. Practicing clear communication about your needs, such as rest, meals, time alone, emotional check-ins, can help reduce resentment and build connection. Setting expectations early creates a shared understanding for the season ahead.

Make a Postpartum Plan (For You)

A postpartum plan can act as an anchor when days feel unpredictable. Include:

  • Who you can call for emotional support
  • Quick meals and snacks
  • Grounding tools, such as breathing, walks, journaling
  • Contact info for professional support

This isn’t about controlling everything, it’s about creating safety for your future self.

You Are Still Becoming

Motherhood invites change. You’re not losing yourself, you’re expanding. Give yourself permission to feel deeply, ask for help, and grow slowly. You don’t have to walk this season alone.
