Postpartum Anxiety

We talk a lot about postpartum depression, but postpartum anxiety deserves just as much attention.

After having a baby, it’s completely normal to feel protective and alert. You’re learning a brand-new human. You’re sleeping less. Your hormones are shifting dramatically. A little extra worry? That makes sense.

But Postpartum Anxiety goes beyond typical new-parent nerves.

It can feel like:

  • Racing thoughts that won’t slow down
  • Constant “what if” scenarios
  • Trouble sleeping, even when the baby is asleep
  • Physical symptoms like a tight chest, nausea, or a pounding heart
  • Feeling on edge or unable to relax

Some parents describe it as their brain being stuck in overdrive. Others say they feel like something bad is about to happen, even when everything is fine.

One of the tricky things about postpartum anxiety is that it can hide behind high-functioning behavior. You might look calm on the outside while internally running through 47 worst-case scenarios before breakfast.

And here’s the important part: it is common. It is treatable. And it is not a personal failure.

Hormonal shifts, lack of sleep, birth experiences, feeding challenges, and the weight of new responsibility can all contribute. Sometimes it shows up immediately. Sometimes it builds gradually.

If your worry feels intrusive, constant, or overwhelming, talk to your provider. Therapy, support groups, medication, or a combination can be incredibly helpful. You deserve to feel steady, not constantly bracing.

Support at home also matters more than most parents realize. Rest. Nourishment. Someone to say, “You’re doing a good job.” Someone to hold the baby while you breathe.

At Doulas of Utah, our postpartum doulas are trained to notice when something feels heavier than normal adjustment. We offer calm, steady, nonjudgmental support during those tender early weeks, so you’re not navigating them alone.

If you’re feeling like your mind won’t slow down, reach out. Support is part of healing.
