Bathing your baby for the first time is an exciting milestone, but it can also bring up a lot of anxiety. However, bathing can become a soothing and positive experience for you and your baby.
There are two primary methods for bathing your baby:
Steps for Sponge Bathing Your Baby (Before umbilical cord falls off):
1. Choose a warm, draft-free room and place your baby on a soft towel or changing pad.
2. Keep them wrapped in a blanket or towel, uncovering only one area at a time.
3. Using a clean, warm washcloth (no soap is needed), gently wipe your baby’s face, neck, arms, and legs.
4. Finish by cleaning the diaper area last.
5. Pat your baby dry with a soft towel and dress them in warm, clean clothes.
Bathing Your Baby through Submersion (After the umbilical cord falls off)
1. Fill the tub with just a few inches of warm water (around 98–100°F).
2. Gently lower your baby into the water, supporting their head and neck.
3. Use your hand or a washcloth to gently rinse and clean, beginning with the cleanest areas first and saving the diaper area for last.
4. Rinse thoroughly and keep your baby warm by pouring water gently over their body.
5. Lift your baby out slowly and wrap them immediately in a dry towel.
Gather These Items Before You Begin:
- Soft washcloths
- Gentle baby soap (optional)
- Cup for rinsing
- Hooded towel
- Fresh diaper and clothes
- Baby tub or bath insert
Safety and Comfort Tips:
- Never leave your baby unattended during a bath.
- Keep your hand on your baby at all times.
- Use water that is warm, not hot and always test it with your wrist or elbow.
- Keep the bath area calm and quiet to help your baby feel secure.
