Physical Recovery After Vaginal Birth

Physical recovery after vaginal birth looks different for every parent, but understanding what’s normal can help you feel more prepared and supported during the postpartum period.

In the first few days after birth, it’s common to experience soreness, swelling, and bleeding (known as lochia). The uterus is also actively shrinking back to its pre-pregnancy size, which can cause cramping, especially during feeding sessions. If there were any tears or stitches, those areas may feel tender as they heal.

One of the most important parts of physical recovery after vaginal birth is rest. While it can be tempting to jump back into normal routines, your body has just done something incredible and needs time to recover. Prioritizing sleep, staying hydrated, and eating nourishing meals can all support healing.

Perineal care is also key. Using a peri bottle, taking sitz baths, and keeping the area clean and dry can help reduce discomfort and promote healing. Many parents find relief with cold packs or witch hazel pads during the first week or two.

Movement should be gentle at first. Short walks can support circulation and help you feel more like yourself, but it’s important to listen to your body and avoid overexertion. Heavier activity and exercise should be reintroduced gradually and with guidance from your provider.

It’s also important to watch for signs that something may need medical attention, such as increasing pain, heavy bleeding, fever, or unusual discharge. When in doubt, reaching out to your provider is always the right choice.

Physical recovery after vaginal birth isn’t just about healing physically, it’s also about having the right support in place so you can rest, recover, and adjust to life with your new baby.
