Newborn Care 101: What to Expect in the Early Weeks

Bringing home a new baby is exciting, but it can also feel like a lot all at once. If you’re wondering how to take care of your newborn and what’s actually “normal,” you’re not alone. Consider this your Newborn Care 101 guide to the basics.

Feeding Your Newborn

Newborns eat frequently, typically every 2-3 hours. Whether you’re breastfeeding, bottle feeding, or a combination of both, the goal is to ensure your baby is feeding effectively and gaining weight appropriately. In the beginning, it can feel constant, and that’s completely normal.

Sleep (and Why It Feels So Unpredictable)

Newborn sleep is often one of the biggest surprises for parents. Babies don’t follow a schedule right away and may sleep in short stretches around the clock. Safe sleep is key: always place your baby on their back, on a firm surface, with no loose items in the sleep space.

Diapering & Hygiene

Expect frequent diaper changes, often 8-12 per day. Keeping your baby clean and dry helps prevent irritation. When it comes to bathing, a few times per week is enough in the early weeks, along with daily wipe-downs of the face, neck, and diaper area.

Soothing Your Baby

Crying is your baby’s primary way of communicating. Common soothing techniques include:

  • Feeding
  • Swaddling
  • Gentle rocking
  • Skin-to-skin contact

It may take some trial and error to learn what works best for your baby, and that’s part of the process.
