Dental Health During Pregnancy

I have a close relative who used to brag that she had never had a single cavity in her life. Perfect checkups, no fillings, no drills, nothing. Then she got pregnant with her first baby and, to her shock, she left her next dental visit with news of five cavities. She hadn’t changed her habits all that much, but her dentist explained that pregnancy itself can dramatically impact dental health.

Pregnancy hormones, changes in eating habits, and even increased acidity from morning sickness can all wreak havoc on teeth and gums. Higher levels of progesterone and estrogen can make gums more sensitive, swollen, and prone to bleeding, a condition often called “pregnancy gingivitis.” Combine that with snacking more often to fight nausea, or the enamel wear from frequent vomiting, and suddenly teeth that have been strong for years can become vulnerable.

That’s why dental care during pregnancy isn’t just about keeping your smile bright; it’s about protecting both your health and your baby’s. Gum disease in pregnancy has even been linked in some studies to preterm birth and low birth weight.

So what can you do? Keep up with your regular brushing and flossing, of course, but also:

  • Don’t skip dental checkups. Routine cleanings and exams are safe during pregnancy and can catch problems early.
  • Tell your dentist you’re pregnant. They can adapt treatment plans and make sure you get safe, appropriate care.
  • Stay on top of nausea management. If you experience frequent vomiting, rinse with baking soda and water to neutralize stomach acid before brushing.
  • Choose tooth-healthy snacks. Protein-rich foods, nuts, and cheese are better choices than frequent sugary or starchy snacks.

Your dental health is a vital part of your overall well-being during pregnancy. By taking a few extra precautions, you can help prevent unwanted surprises at the dentist, and keep your smile healthy for years to come.
