Changing Providers in Pregnancy

When it comes to pregnancy, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is choosing the provider who will care for you during this transformational journey. Whether you’re seeing an OB-GYN, a midwife, or a family doctor, that relationship can deeply influence your experience of pregnancy, labor, and birth. But what happens when something just doesn’t feel right? If you’re feeling uneasy, unheard, or unsupported, it may be time to consider changing providers in pregnancy—no matter how far along you are.

You Deserve a Provider Who Respects You

Every pregnant person deserves to feel respected, informed, and empowered in their care. If you find yourself walking away from appointments feeling dismissed, anxious, or confused, that’s not something to ignore. Your care provider should not only be clinically competent but also someone you trust—someone who listens to your concerns, honors your birth preferences, and supports your role in decision-making.

Too often, people hesitate to make a change because they feel it’s “too late” or that they’ll be seen as difficult. But here’s the truth: you are the expert on your body, your baby, and your experience. If your gut is telling you something is off, it’s worth paying attention.

Changing Providers in Pregnancy Isn’t Uncommon

While it might feel like a big deal, changing providers in pregnancy is actually quite common. Many people switch providers when they’re just a few weeks pregnant, while others make the change in the third trimester—and yes, even at 36, 38 or even 40+ weeks. It’s never too late to advocate for the kind of care you want and deserve.

You might choose to change for a variety of reasons:

  • You’re not comfortable with the provider’s communication style
  • You feel pressure to consent to interventions you’re not ready for
  • Your values around birth don’t align
  • You’re considering a different birth location
  • You want to switch from an OB to a midwife (or vice versa)
  • You’re simply not feeling the connection or support you need

Whatever your reason, it is valid.

Trusting Your Intuition Matters

Pregnancy is a deeply intuitive time. You’re not just growing a baby—you’re growing into your role as a parent, and with that comes a powerful inner knowing. Sometimes, your intuition whispers. Other times, it shouts. Either way, it’s worth listening to.

If you’re feeling uncomfortable with your current provider, ask yourself:

  • Do I feel heard during my appointments?
  • Do I feel safe to ask questions or express concerns?
  • Do I feel confident in this provider’s ability to support my preferences?
  • Am I making choices out of fear or empowerment?

If the answer to these questions is no—or even just uncertain—there’s no shame in exploring other options.

How to Make the Switch

If you decide that changing providers in pregnancy is right for you, here are some steps you can take:

  1. Start by researching other providers in your area. You can ask your doula, friends, or local parenting groups for recommendations that align with your birth preferences.
  2. Call ahead and ask about availability. Not all providers accept transfers late in pregnancy, but many do—especially those who prioritize patient-centered care.
  3. Request your medical records from your current provider. You’re entitled to these, and having them on hand can help your new provider get up to speed.
  4. Schedule a consultation if possible before committing to the switch. This gives you a chance to get a feel for the new provider’s philosophy and bedside manner.
  5. Communicate your decision with confidence. You don’t owe your previous provider a detailed explanation, but it’s okay to say you’re moving on because it feels like the best choice for your care.

You’re Not Being “Difficult”—You’re Being Wise

Advocating for yourself during pregnancy isn’t selfish or dramatic—it’s a powerful act of self-trust. Whether you’re 10 weeks or 39 weeks, it’s never too late to realign with care that feels right to you.
