When Should You Start Looking for Postpartum Support?

Pregnancy comes with plenty of timelines: when to choose a pediatrician, when to prepare the nursery, when to pack your hospital bag. But one thing families often don’t think about until much later is when to start looking for postpartum support.

The short answer? Earlier than you might think.

You don’t need to have every detail figured out, but beginning your search during pregnancy gives you more time to find the right support, think through what you want your postpartum experience to look like, and secure the schedule that works best for your family.

The Best Time to Hire a Postpartum Doula

For families who know they want professional support after birth, the second trimester or early third trimester is a great time to begin looking.

Experienced postpartum doulas often book months in advance, particularly for families wanting consistent schedules or overnight newborn care several nights per week.

Starting early also gives you time to think beyond simply, “Will we need help?”

Instead, you can ask:

  • Do we want daytime support, overnight care, or both?
  • How many nights or shifts per week would feel ideal?
  • How long would we like support to continue?
  • What are our biggest goals for the postpartum period?

If you’re unsure, our guide to how many hours of postpartum support most families need can help you start thinking through those decisions.

Why Planning Before Baby Arrives Makes a Difference

It’s much easier to think intentionally about your postpartum experience before you’re navigating newborn feedings, physical recovery, and interrupted sleep.

Booking your postpartum support during pregnancy also gives you an opportunity to meet your doula, discuss feeding and newborn care preferences, and create a plan before your baby arrives.

If you’re still deciding what you’d like those first few weeks to look like, start by creating a postpartum plan.

What If You Want Overnight Support?

If sleep and recovery are priorities, I would be especially proactive about reserving care.

Families looking for a night nanny in Salt Lake City often want multiple nights each week, which requires more availability than an occasional daytime shift. Booking during pregnancy gives us the best opportunity to build a consistent overnight schedule around your family’s goals.

What If My Baby Is Already Here?

Reach out anyway.

While booking during pregnancy gives you the most options, we regularly hear from families after their babies arrive. Sometimes parents planned to rely on family and realized they needed something different. Sometimes sleep deprivation becomes harder than expected. And sometimes families simply decide they’d enjoy this season more with additional support.

Availability changes frequently, so it’s always worth asking.

You Don’t Need to Know Exactly What You’ll Need Yet

One of the biggest reasons to start looking early is that you don’t have to figure it all out yourself.

At Doulas of Utah, we’ll talk through your goals, desired schedule, feeding plans, recovery, existing support system, and what you want those first weeks to feel like. From there, we can help you determine the amount and type of support that makes sense for your family.

Whether you’re planning months ahead or holding your newborn while reading this, the best time to start the conversation is when you begin wondering whether postpartum support might make your experience better.
